HELMET OF A DRAGOONS OFFICER, CIRCA 1810, FIRST EMPIRE
Helmet of a Dragoons officer, circa 1810, First Empire.
Gilded brass skull. Turban composed of a leather band and covered by a panther skin. Fitting buckle at the back. Leather and hide peak. Chin strap composed of two parts. Gilded brass plume socket. Inside composed of a fine leather headband topped by a pink silk headband.
Very good condition. Gilt slightly worn off on skull; headband worn out.

At the beginning of the Empire, the shape of the skull of Dragoons officers was round, the crest was quite straight. Around 1808, the crest became more curved. From 1810, the shape ‘à la Minerve’ was largely in use; the skull became higher, was tilted backward, and the crest rose. Within ten years, the convenient helmet had turned into an imposing helmet, that looked grand for parades but embarrassing for war! In 1872, a new model took up the dimensions of 18th century helmets. It took about one century for people to realize that the first helmets were better proportioned.
